2005 Late Harvest Riesling
VINEYARD: All the fruit for this wine comes from our oldest vines from the Seresin Home Vineyard on the upper terraces surrounding the winery. The vineyard is made up of a variety of Waimakiriri type soils of alluvial origin. Our vines are all on narrow-row spacing which promotes competition and encourages a lighter crop on each vine. The Late Harvest Riesling was hand-picked at the end of May.
CLONES: GM110 and TK05209
VINIFICATION: The fruit was left for 24 hours in sealed containers to maximise skin contact and then pressed over an eight-hour press cycle. Fermentation proceeded slowly due to the high sugar content and was stopped by chilling once the desired balance of sugar and acidity was achieved.
The finished wine has an alcohol of 10.5 percent, a pH of 2.91, 7.2g/L titratable acid and 68g/L residual sugar.
WINEMAKER'S NOTES: The nose exhibits dried apricot, honeysuckle and beeswax aromas. Slightly flinty, the palate is rich with concentrated orange marmalade and stonefruit flavours and a well supported acidity.
CELLARING POTENTIAL: This wine will improve over the next ten years, becoming richer and more honeyed as it ages.
