2008 Raupo Pinot Gris
VINEYARD: The fruit for this wine comes from our clay rich hillside Raupo Creek vineyard. Two different parcels of Pinot Gris were hand-picked on March 26th at approximately 25Brix.
VINIFICATION: The fruit was hand-sorted before being whole bunch-pressed and then lightly settled. Wild yeast was used for fermentation, which was maintained at a slow rate by low temperatures to enhance the primary fruit characters. At around 10Brix the wine was transferred to older French barriques to finish fermentation. The wine spent a total of fifteen months in barrel
The finished wine has an alcohol of 14.5 percent, pH of 3.45, 7.0g/L titratable acid and 18g/L residual sugar.
WINEMAKER'S NOTES: The nose exhibits aromas of honey, nectarine and almonds with an underlying minerality. The weighty palate is viscous and richly textured with flavours of quince, dried-fruit and spice. A focused acidity provides finesse and draws out the palate.
CELLARING POTENTIAL: Drinking well now, this wine has the potential to improve over the next five years.
"The 2008 Seresin Estate Raupo Pinot Gris has a strong aroma of smoky lemon, musk and baked pear. Very faint spicy cinnamon and sweet spice also, but these secondary characters are subtle. The wine has great intensity and focus with an soft, silky, almost creamy flavour. The palate is balanced by finely judged acidity that stops the wine from becoming too much, whilst still retaining a delicious hedonistic succulence. A persistent and poised finish completes the picture."
