2008 Gewurztraminer
VINEYARD: This wine is made entirely from fruit from our clay-rich Raupo Creek vineyard which is located on the foothills at the southern end of the Omaka Valley. The Gewurztraminer was hand-picked between March 19 and April 11.
CLONES: 457, 1106, 456
VINIFICATION: The fruit was hand-sorted and then whole bunch-pressed to ensure that no phenolic or bitter characteristics were extracted. The juice was then transferred to tank and cool fermented. To balance the powerful fruit concentration, from low yields, the 2008 Gewurztraminer has a small amount of residual sugar. The wine was lightly filtered before being bottled in August 2008.
The finished wine has an alcohol of 14 percent, pH of 3.75, 3.8g/L titratable acid and 5g/L residual sugar.
WINEMAKER'S NOTES: The nose exhibits aromas of rose petals, fresh lychee and a hint of ginger. The palate is textural and mouth-coating with zesty orange, and vanilla bean flavours and a spicy dry finish.
CELLARING POTENTIAL: This is drinking well now but has the potential to improve over the next five years.
"“92 Points.
The sublime 2008 Gewurztraminer has a very vibrant bouquet, good definition with subtle notes of honeysuckle, tinned apricot, white peach and a touch of hazelnut. Not blowsy at all - very controlled. Again, the palate is understated, with a lovely sense of balance. Subtle aromatic fruits, apricots, white peach, a touch of lemongrass and ginger with a controlled landing on the finish. A great success, just like the 2007. "
