2005 Riesling
VINEYARD: The fruit for this wine is from thirteen year old vines grown in the Seresin Home vineyard, on the upper terraces surrounding the winery. The vineyard is made up of a variety of Waimakiriri type soils of alluvial origin with free-draining basalt pebbles. Our vines are all on narrow-row spacing which promotes competition and encourages a lighter crop on each vine. Our Riesling was handpicked on May 1.
CLONES: GM110 and TK05209
VINIFICATION: The Riesling was hand-sorted to ensure that no Botrytis-affected berries were included in the press. The fruit was then whole-bunch pressed to prevent phenolic or bitter characteristics from being extracted. After pressing the juice was settled until it was crystal clear and then fermented through to dryness at low temperatures to retain fruit flavour.
The finished wine has an alcohol of 12.5 percent, a pH of 3, 7.4/L titratable acid and 3.4g/L residual sugar.
WINEMAKER'S NOTES: The nose exhibits aromas of citrus and lime with a flinty, mineral complexity. The palate is crisp with flavours of grapefruit and hints of honeysuckle.
CELLARING POTENTIAL: This wine will improve over the next ten years, and become richer and more honeyed as it ages.
"Intense and vibrant organic riesling with lovely lime, honeycomb and mineral flavours. Now showing good bottle development, with the flavours beginning to build, mellow and integrate."
Bob Campbell, Gourmet Traveller Wine (AUS) April, 2008
